The strength to move is here — to expand, to break the resistance, to press the advantage. Use it only on the established paths (the image's discipline): with all this thunder available, tread nothing that departs from sound practice or fair dealing. The gates opening (line 2) is exactly when danger changes shape — success breeds the swagger that discards the modesty which earned it, so persevere as though the gates were still shut. Watch the goat in the operation (line 3): head down, ramming the same obstacle — a market that won't convert, a partner who won't yield — until the horns entangle. The masterful alternative is line 4: quiet, persevering work at the resistance until it simply opens, power like a great cart's axle — load-bearing and invisible.
The Power of the Great in Business
Business and strategy
Strength at flood tide — powerful only when joined to what is right.
Use this interpretation for business decisions, leadership, risk, and long-range strategy.
Hexagram 34 in business means power at flood tide: momentum, capital, confidence, the gates to expansion standing open. The oracle attaches its whole weight to one condition — strength must stay married to what is right. Joined to sound principle, power carries the venture far; divorced from it, it is mere force — a catastrophe looking for its moment.
Confidence and drive are high, and the season favours bold, principled moves. Keep the boldness on the right paths: decisive expansion into real demand, yes; conquest for its own sake, forcing a market, or momentum mistaken for a mandate, never. Check the toes (line 1): if the surge wants to advance by pure force from a low position — the premature scale-up, the overwhelming spend before product-market fit — the verdict is rare in its certainty: misfortune, certainly. From the bottom, forward pressure is presumption. Strength that can wait for the way to open, and pass on the wrong deal without flinching, is the strength that builds something that lasts.
Power's shadow is the goat: head down, butting everything that resists, entangling its horns in every hedge. Watch for the supervisory ego that overrides every team decision, the flush of capability that discards the discipline which built the venture, and the aggressive advance that treats momentum as permission. Great strength in business fails almost exclusively by overreach — no rival is usually strong enough to defeat it. If wedged (line 6) — pressed so far that neither advancing nor retreating works — the exit begins with admitting that force created the deadlock.
The six lines in business
Power in the toes
The urge to advance by force from a low position — the premature scale-up. Push now and misfortune is certain. Let the strength wait.
The gates open
Resistance gives way and the way opens — exactly when success discards the modesty that earned it. Persevere as though the gates were still shut.
The goat and the hedge
Ramming the same obstacle until the horns entangle. Boasting strength and forcing outcomes is the inferior method — back the goat out.
The hedge opens
Quiet, persevering work removes the resistance and it opens without a fight. Power like the axle of a great cart — invisible, load-bearing. Live here.
Losing the goat with ease
Where resistance has ceased, drop the combat-readiness. The butting stubbornness given up gently costs nothing and frees everything.
Wedged in the hedge
Forced so far that no direction works. Recognising honestly that force built the deadlock is itself what begins loosening it.
Where is our strength serving the venture, and where is it just winning?
What hedge are we ramming that quiet, patient work would open?
Can this business pass on the wrong deal as readily as it seizes the right one?
