You're in the gorge together — a hard passage that isn't one crisis but a series. Be water: flow through each difficulty completely rather than resisting it, stay genuinely yourselves with each other (danger strips pretence anyway — let it), and strive only for small gains (line 2): the kind word today, one honest conversation, this week survived well. Grand solutions and sweeping renegotiations exceed what a mind under pressure can carry — they belong to dry land. And keep the earthen-vessel simplicity of line 4: in extremity, drop all ceremony with each other; plain truth plainly given is the ration that gets couples through gorges.
The Abysmal (Water) in Love
Love and relationships
Deep water, repeated — sincerity is what crosses it.
Read this hexagram through closeness, attraction, partnership, and emotional timing.
Hexagram 29 in love means the relationship — or the heart — is in deep water: danger repeated, difficulty upon difficulty. The teacher is water itself: it crosses every abyss by staying true to its nature and never forcing. Sincerity all the way through is what succeeds here; pretence, panic, and ambition are what drown.
The dark water may be grief, depression, or a run of bruising experiences that make the heart brace at the thought of trying again. Water's counsel: don't set up house in the abyss (line 1 — danger grown familiar becomes the pit), and don't lunge for rescue either — the relationship grabbed at as a life-raft becomes its own gorge. Fill this low place completely: feel what's real, learn what it teaches, and pass on when it's full. Keep walking in lasting virtue (the image): steady character through the dark stretch is exactly what you'll be glad of on the far side.
The shadow is the abyss's psychology: habituation — wrong things normalised until the water feels like home; panic-thrashing — dramatic moves that sink faster; and despair's pooling — deciding the dark is all there is. Watch for forward-and-back paralysis (line 3): when every direction seems to drop away, the counsel is genuinely wait, not flail. And note line 6's warning about persisting in a wrong course inside a relationship: cords become ropes, hedges become walls; the exit is earliest now.
The six lines in love
Falling into the pit
Growing used to the danger — the dysfunction normalised, the coldness routine. Don't make peace with the abyss; turn back now.
Small gains only
In the midst of the difficulty, attempt nothing sweeping. One honest inch today; the gorge is escaped by inches.
Abyss ahead and behind
Every move worsens it — so don't move. Pause, hold your heart steady, and let the way out show itself to stillness.
The earthen vessel
Ceremony falls away; sincerity through the window. Meet each other with total simplicity — plain truth is the rescue ration.
Filled only to the rim
Escape by the modest route: only as much change as the exit requires. Don't overflow — ambition in the rescue re-digs the pit.
Bound and hedged in
Persisting against all counsel until trapped in the consequences. If bound already: patience and quiet goodness, and the thorns open — slowly.
Am I flowing through this difficulty — or resisting it into permanence?
What small gain is actually available this week?
Have I grown comfortable in water I should be crossing?
