The mountain holds the lake by resting beneath it — and this is how a parent or elder truly leads. Influence at home starts with the willingness to receive: the open ear, the door that is genuinely open before the advice is offered. That readiness deprives tense situations of their tension and draws children and relatives closer than any pressure could push them. Watch where the influence sits in the body of the household: toes and calves (lines 1–2) are twitches and impulses — notice them, don't be driven by them; the thighs (line 3) chase after every stirring — refrain. The heart (line 4) is where it is decided: keep yours still and free of agendas, because an agitated heart projecting its designs on a child reaches only that child, and only while it aims.
Influence in Family
Family and home life
Influence at home works by invitation and openness, never pressure.
Read this hexagram through home life, close bonds, household dynamics, and care.
Hexagram 31 in family means influence that invites rather than compels — the strong placing itself below, the gentle responding freely. You move family members not by pressure, charm, or argument but by being the kind of person effects flow from. Its first move is receptivity: your readiness to receive them is what draws them near.
Where a relative has drifted or a teenager has closed off, resist the campaign. An innocent, independent attitude draws back the estranged and keeps at bay those who press in for selfish reasons — so hold your own equilibrium and let your steadiness do the inviting. Line 2's counsel is exact: being drawn along by another's apparent change, or by the itch to fix things now, brings misfortune; waiting until sincerity is genuinely established brings good fortune. Real change in family members happens slowly and out of view. And line 6 warns off the tempting shortcut of influence dwindled to talk — lectures and logic the household can see you don't back with your own conduct.
The shadow is manufactured influence: the wish to produce effects in family members — by guilt, argument, image, or pressure — rather than to be someone effects flow from. Watch the agitated heart that projects its agenda onto a child's choices, the emotional shortcut used to steer a relative, and the talker who influences with the tongue what the life does not back. Each gains compliance and loses the person. What is won at home by manoeuvring must be held by manoeuvring, forever.
The six lines in family
In the big toe
The first stirring of an urge to intervene — nothing visible yet. Check your inner state now, while the movement is only a twitch.
In the calves
Drawn along by a relative's apparent shift or your own itch to act. Misfortune in following it; fortune in waiting for real sincerity.
In the thighs
Chasing every stirring — pursuing the estranged family member. Refrain; the one who doesn't chase keeps the composure that draws people back.
In the heart
The decisive line: a still, agenda-free heart influences the whole household naturally. An agitated one reaches only whom it targets. Keep it clean.
The back of the neck
Will grown firm and unreactive — no longer jerked about by each family mood or drama. Steadiness here ends the remorse.
Jaws, cheeks, tongue
Influence dwindled to lectures the conduct doesn't back. It moves no one at home; let your life do the persuading.
Am I inviting this family member, or campaigning at them?
What is my heart projecting when I think of them — stillness or agenda?
Where am I being moved by impulse and calling it care?
