The bond deepens now by receptivity: influence each other the way the mountain holds the lake — steady, open, letting your readiness to receive do the inviting. Watch where the influence sits in the body of the relationship: toes and calves (lines 1–2) are twitches and impulses — notice them, don't be driven by them; the thighs (line 3) chase after every stirring — refrain; the heart (line 4) is where it's decided — keep yours still and free of agendas, because an unquiet heart projecting its designs reaches only its targets and only briefly. Courtship never ends in good marriages: keep wooing — invitation, not assumption.
Influence in Love
Love and relationships
The courtship hexagram — attraction works by invitation, never pressure.
Read this hexagram through closeness, attraction, partnership, and emotional timing.
Hexagram 31 in love means genuine mutual attraction — this is the I Ching's courtship hexagram, and its Judgment explicitly blesses marriage. The mechanics matter: the strong places itself below the gentle, inviting rather than pressing, and joy responds freely. Attraction of this kind never coerces and never seduces; it makes approach easy and lets the other come.
This is among the best hexagrams for new love: real attraction is present or approaching, and the counsel is exact. Initiate the way the strong rightly initiates — by placing yourself below: genuine interest, humility, making it easy and safe for the other to respond, then room for them to respond freely. No campaigns, no pressure, no seduction tactics — what's won by manoeuvring must be held by manoeuvring forever. Keep your inner state clean while you wait between moves (constancy of the heart is felt at a distance), and let the mutual pull do the work it genuinely wants to do.
The shadow is manufactured influence: the agitated heart projecting its agenda — texting campaigns, engineered jealousy, charm deployed as strategy. Equally shadowed: being merely moved — swept along by every impulse and appearance (the calves), or chasing each stirring (the thighs) until your dignity is in the other's pocket. And the tongue's version (line 6): influence attempted through talk the life doesn't back. Words alone woo no one worth winning.
The six lines in love
In the big toe
The very first stirring of interest — nothing visible yet. Check your inner state now, while the movement is still only a twitch.
In the calves
Drawn along by impulse and appearances. Misfortune in following it; fortune in waiting until the sincerity is established.
In the thighs
Chasing every stirring of the heart — running after the person. Refrain; the one who doesn't chase keeps the very composure that attracts.
In the heart
The decisive line: a still, agenda-free heart influences everything naturally. An agitated one reaches only whom it targets. Keep it clean.
The back of the neck
Will grown firm and unreactive — no longer jerked about by their every mood or message. Steadiness here ends the remorse.
Jaws, cheeks, tongue
Influence dwindled to talk — charming words the conduct doesn't back. It moves no one; let your life do the wooing.
Am I inviting this person, or campaigning at them?
What is my heart projecting when I think of them — stillness or agenda?
Where am I being moved by impulse and calling it feeling?
